The 10 Biggest Fashion Trends of 2023
Every year, the fashion industry serves up a selection of exciting new trends on a shiny platter. It’s not always easy to spot the extra shiny gems among the treasure chest of styles, but we’ve managed to pluck them out and gather them here for you to enjoy — so — enjoy!
The Fashion Trends That Will Dominate 2023
Cutouts… or Obliques?
Cutouts continued to dominate formal wear on the New York runways. Howeve, this time around, designers were picking a side. One-sided oblique cutouts were everywhere and on everyone — Karlie Kloss wore a one-shoulder iteration at Carolina Herrera and Gigi Hadid rocked the look at Tom Ford. The style is a great way to emphasize your waist, show a little skin, and play up any simple gown.
Mini Dress
We can only assume this trend arose from the insatiable love we saw for long blazers in 2022. As the blazers got longer, there was no longer any need for trousers — hence the mini-dress appeal began to set in again. So, the barrage of mini dresses on the catwalks at fashion weeks around the world in 2022 didn’t come as a surprise. Designers often paired them with chunky, almost combat-esque style boots and stockings for an edgy look that works.
Not-so-fringe Fringing & Tassels
Step over feathers; there’s a new texture-filled style in town — tassels and fringes. Tassel trim is traditionally neutral-toned, which makes it a great option for wardrobe minimalists. Tassels can be easily added to your day-to-day outfits with tasseled suede boots, leather jackets, knitted jumpers, and more! Fringes are also expected to make quite a scene, especially when applied to party dresses and casual coats.
Sheer Genius
The trend in question here is sheer, and the trendsetter is Fendi’s Fall/Winter 2022 collection. The Fendi collection debuted back in February, but its influence was fully felt last week in New York City. In fact, every major collection of NYFW incorporated see-through garments, showcasing realistically wearable sheer with strategic layering, usually in the shape of dreamy dresses that are expected to be a hit this Summer.
Opaque Stockings
While always in style to some extent, thanks to their functionality and downright fabulousness, these “full-figured” stockings are a particular hit among designers at the moment. All things considered, why wouldn’t they be? Most of this year’s trends call for strong, uncompromisable legwear. Opaque stockings define not only the legs but also the entire outfit, resulting in a heightened style that’s instantly fit for the catwalk.
Magenta Magic
Pinkish-purplish-red, reddish-purplish-pink, or mauvish-crimson, however, you describe it — get used to it — you’re going to be seeing a lot of magenta this year. An unconventional color for unconventional times, the Pantone Color Institute chose “Viva Magenta” as their Color of 2023, not a title to be scoffed at. The color hits the sweet spot between pink and red and combines with bright blues and yellows. Not an easy feat, but it looks fantastic.
Valentino, alongside Pantone, have fired the firing gun on magenta, releasing their Valentino “Pink PP Collection” by Pierpaolo Piccioli, which was essentially a sea of excellently executed, ulra-chic magenta fits that have set the scene for more — watch this space.
Ethereal styles
With terms such as “Ballet core,” “Fairy Core,” and “Airy styles” arising in 2022, it’s no surprise we’re heading into a light-hearted, elegant, and irresistibly dainty style era that’s full of good vibes, beauty, and almost celestial attraction that’s all seemingly effortlessly executed with light pastels, neutrals, and mostly pink — enjoy! Naturally, flowy dresses and pretty much flowy everything will be the order of the day.
Cargo, cargo, cargo
Cargo pants, in characteristically cool style, have survived the year’s passing and are expected to thrive in 2023. Style experts camo-print pants and skinny jeans for cargo pants and wide-leg denim for their 2023 wardrobes.
Maxi Skirts
Good news — all of those maxi skirts you acquired last time they were in style and have been sitting in your wardrobe ever since are about to be in high demand! That’s right, the long, flowing maxi dress is back and better than ever. Equal parts versatile and chic, this ankle-length skirt is expected to be a hit in from the Summer through Winter.
Oversized Leather
Leather, in all of its very many iterations, will once again be making a splash this year — a slow-burning one, to be exact — so don’t expect its popularity to rise or fall with the cycle of the seasons. Interestingly, unlike most other years, leather is forecast to maintain its popularity throughout the Summer of 2023.
If you want to know what the catwalks are laying down in terms of leather, it’s uniquely long leather skirts (passed the knee) and large leather jackets. In other words, this is leather but bigger. Another noticeable style choice by many designers in 2022’s fashion weeks was multi-colored leather.
And that’s a wrap!
